Aurillac Arbre de Croumaly. Picture of old Sully tree on an old postcard. We found no tree but we did find Rue de L'arbre de Croumaly. There was a park area on a hill just nearby where we think there had been a Sully tree. It was 30 degrees and we just couldn't manage a full search of the hill!

There was originally a priory on this site but it was destroyed in the wars of religion.
*Poinson-les-Grancy Le Tilleul de Sully on a postcard. We thought this tree was dead but when we visited in Sept 2019 it was very healthy. Toys and decorations have been put around the base.

*St Priest-la-Prugne Le Tilleul de Sully. Sully had ordered the planting of an elm but they planted a lime tree instead. The tree stands at a busy crossroads. It was heavily pruned when we saw it in 2016. There were worries that it was a danger to traffic.
* Laurent (near St Priest-la-Prune) An enormous lime tree stands at the edge of a small copse in this hamlet but there is no evidence it is a Sully. A local man thought it was a possibility.
*St Victor-sur-Rhins “Le Sully”. Only a twisted trunk, with some shoots sprouting from it, remain of this tree but it has been carefully looked after. Its position is marked on the village map.

St Étienne des Champs 'Situé à 1 km du Bourg, ce gros tilleul, dit arbre « de Chabreteix » remonterait à l’époque de SULLY (1560-1641), il fut planté sur ordre du Roi Henri IV à l’occasion de la naissance de son fils (il souhaitait ainsi faire appliquer ses recommandations pour le reboisement des forêts qui étaient trop exploitées selon le Roi). Les Tilleuls de SULLY furent plantés à des lieux stratégiques, celui de Saint-Etienne est situé au point culminant de la commune, à un carrefour de cinq chemins.' I have read that it has been chopped down but a replacement has been planted in its place.

Savennes. A lime tree next to the chateau. Plaque says 'Sully Planté en 1626'. This is well after Henri 1V was assassinated and Sully would have left his post by then. Maybe planted by the locals in the spirit of Sully. There are plenty of examples in Puy de Dome they would have known about.

*Toiras This is a very small hamlet is in the commune of Vernet la Varenne and quite difficult to find. Plaque saying “Je suis un Sully”.
*Tourzel-Ronzieres Deux tilleuls de Sully. There are 2 distinct villages. The two trees are at Ronzieres. I have also read (from les tetards abricoles) that there were 2 more trees by the church, Notre Dame de Ronzieres, on top of the hill in Ronzieres. One seems to be too young to be a Sully. The other had been cut down but is sprouting new growth.

Anost Known as L'Orme de Brevoigne but in fact it is un tilleul! In an article by Roland Niaux, a historian, it is called le tilleul de Sully. It is at a crossroads between the le hameau du Mont, near Dront, et Anost. It shelters un calvaire. It is an enormous tree.

Millers The story goes that Sully ordered Elm trees to be planted all over France to commemorate the end of the wars of religion. Elm trees were planted in Milhars and one of the gates is called 'la porte des ormeaux' and there is a 'Place des ormeaux'. This seems to have been several trees not one but still known as 'arbres de Sully'.
Douelle Place d'ormeau. An old postcard shows a picture of the tree but it looks in bad shape. It is probably dead now. Said to have been planted in 1599 by Charles de Cadillac-Cassac in response to Sully's request.

*St Priest-la-Prugne Le Tilleul de Sully. Sully had ordered the planting of an elm but they planted a lime tree instead. The tree stands at a busy crossroads. It was heavily pruned when we saw it in 2016. There were worries that it was a danger to traffic.
* Laurent (near St Priest-la-Prune) An enormous lime tree stands at the edge of a small copse in this hamlet but there is no evidence it is a Sully. A local man thought it was a possibility.
*St Victor-sur-Rhins “Le Sully”. Only a twisted trunk, with some shoots sprouting from it, remain of this tree but it has been carefully looked after. Its position is marked on the village map.

St Étienne des Champs 'Situé à 1 km du Bourg, ce gros tilleul, dit arbre « de Chabreteix » remonterait à l’époque de SULLY (1560-1641), il fut planté sur ordre du Roi Henri IV à l’occasion de la naissance de son fils (il souhaitait ainsi faire appliquer ses recommandations pour le reboisement des forêts qui étaient trop exploitées selon le Roi). Les Tilleuls de SULLY furent plantés à des lieux stratégiques, celui de Saint-Etienne est situé au point culminant de la commune, à un carrefour de cinq chemins.' I have read that it has been chopped down but a replacement has been planted in its place.

Savennes. A lime tree next to the chateau. Plaque says 'Sully Planté en 1626'. This is well after Henri 1V was assassinated and Sully would have left his post by then. Maybe planted by the locals in the spirit of Sully. There are plenty of examples in Puy de Dome they would have known about.

*Toiras This is a very small hamlet is in the commune of Vernet la Varenne and quite difficult to find. Plaque saying “Je suis un Sully”.
*Tourzel-Ronzieres Deux tilleuls de Sully. There are 2 distinct villages. The two trees are at Ronzieres. I have also read (from les tetards abricoles) that there were 2 more trees by the church, Notre Dame de Ronzieres, on top of the hill in Ronzieres. One seems to be too young to be a Sully. The other had been cut down but is sprouting new growth.

Anost Known as L'Orme de Brevoigne but in fact it is un tilleul! In an article by Roland Niaux, a historian, it is called le tilleul de Sully. It is at a crossroads between the le hameau du Mont, near Dront, et Anost. It shelters un calvaire. It is an enormous tree.

Millers The story goes that Sully ordered Elm trees to be planted all over France to commemorate the end of the wars of religion. Elm trees were planted in Milhars and one of the gates is called 'la porte des ormeaux' and there is a 'Place des ormeaux'. This seems to have been several trees not one but still known as 'arbres de Sully'.
Douelle Place d'ormeau. An old postcard shows a picture of the tree but it looks in bad shape. It is probably dead now. Said to have been planted in 1599 by Charles de Cadillac-Cassac in response to Sully's request.
